Clam dip is a creamy and flavorful appetizer that is perfect for any occasion. Made with tender, briny clams, smooth cream cheese, and a blend of seasonings, this dip is an excellent addition to your appetizer spread.

It’s easy to prepare, requiring only a few ingredients, and is sure to be a hit at parties, picnics, or casual get-togethers. The slight tang from the cream cheese and the savory richness from the clams make this dip irresistible when served with crispy crackers, fresh vegetables, or even warm, toasted bread. It’s a simple, yet sophisticated dish that captures the essence of the sea in every bite.

Ingredients

For the Dip:

1 can (6.5 oz) chopped clams, drained (reserve liquid)

8 oz cream cheese, softened

1/2 cup sour cream

1 tablespoon mayonnaise

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

1/4 teaspoon onion powder

1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional, for a smoky flavor)

Salt and pepper, to taste

Fresh parsley or chives, chopped (for garnish)

For Serving:

Crispy crackers

Sliced fresh vegetables (carrot sticks, celery, cucumber)

Toasted baguette slices

How to Make

Step 1: Prepare the Clams

Open the can of clams and drain the liquid. Reserve about 2 tablespoons of the clam liquid for added flavor.

Chop the clams into small, bite-sized pieces if they are large.

Step 2: Mix the Base Ingredients

In a medium-sized bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, sour cream, mayonnaise, and lemon juice.

Use a hand mixer or a whisk to blend the ingredients together until smooth and creamy. If the mixture is too thick, add a bit of the reserved clam liquid to reach your desired consistency.

Step 3: Add the Seasonings

Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika (if using), salt, and pepper.

Mix well to ensure the seasonings are evenly distributed.

Step 4: Fold in the Clams

Gently fold the chopped clams into the cream cheese mixture, making sure they are evenly incorporated. Taste the dip and adjust the seasoning, adding more salt, pepper, or lemon juice if necessary.

Step 5: Chill the Dip

Cover the dip and refrigerate it for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld and the dip to chill.

Garnish with freshly chopped parsley or chives just before serving.

Step 6: Serve

Serve the clam dip with your choice of crackers, sliced vegetables, or toasted baguette slices for dipping.

Chef’s Note

Clam Variations: If you prefer fresh clams, you can steam or poach them, then chop them finely and use them in place of canned clams. Just be sure to reserve some of the clam broth to add extra flavor to the dip.

Texture Tip: For a smoother dip, you can blend the cream cheese mixture in a food processor for a velvety texture, then fold in the clams by hand to retain some bite.

Make it Spicy: If you like a bit of heat, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a few dashes of hot sauce to the dip for a spicy kick.

Make-Ahead: This dip can be made a day in advance and stored in the refrigerator. The flavors will develop further as it sits, making it even more delicious the next day.

Serving Suggestion: If you’re serving this dip for a larger crowd, you can make it in a baking dish and bake it in the oven for 10-15 minutes at 350°F (175°C) until golden and bubbly. This gives the dip a warm, comforting touch.
